Bullheads

Bullheads by Gary C. Busha

Announcing the 12th mini, pocket-size chapbook by Gary C. Busha. The book measures 3-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches and is 27 pages. Cover color will vary.

The newest release is Bullheads, featuring the theme of growing, more ol’ man poems, and of course cleaning bullheads. Most of these poems have been published before. This book is a selection of some of them. Here are a couple of excerpts:

The ol’ man levels the dock by eyeball

He drove in the posts and nailed on cross-braces
and got them level enough by eye, and I helped to slide
the three dock sections out and finally the big platform end.
He was wearing hip boots at first and then got the waders.

How does it look? Level enough? Looks good to me, I said.
A little crooked, but good enough for government work, he said.

A few more taps on the posts with the 16-pound sledge
and she’s in solid. Then we carried the bench out to the platform
and put the hand railing on one side.

I got the coffee can full of nightcrawlers and some flat rocks
from the shoreline to hold the cane poles.
The ol’ man blew his nose and spat in the water. I spat too.

Let’s fish, the ol’ man said as he lit a factory rejects cigar.

Pickles

I believe
a giant octopus
lives in an urn
in the basement
ready to curl its
spiney arms
around me

One day
I find the urn
strung with cobwebs
in a rubble
of dusty lumber
Inside are alligators
afloat
in the Sargasso Sea.

The Skeptic

Announcing the 11th mini, pocket-size chapbook by Gary C. Busha. The books measure 3-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches and are 27 pages. Color of cover will vary.

The newest release is THE SKEPTIC, featuring a long narrative poem “The Skeptic’s Dream.” Unlike earlier books, this one does not include haiku. Instead, these poems combined have a central philosophical theme of skepticism, self doubt, and various musings. Here is an excerpt:

Hocking Apples

Not that we liked the taste no, the fun was in hocking them right under their noses
and getting away with our caps and pockets full
and proving to ourselves how much courage we had
later sitting under the railroad trestle
polishing them on our knees tasting the bitter fruit
saying the only thing worse than
a worm in your apple was finding half a worm
and acting like they were delicious
rubbing out bellies with pride
when the apples made our bellies ache.

We knew every apple tree in the neighborhood
and we knew which apples were the best
and which trees were the most watched
by crusty old swearing men and sharp-nosed widows
behind lace curtains watching beady-eyed
but we didn’t care they hated us for our sneakiness
and we didn’t care they called us greedy bastards
for hocking what they had worked so hard
to keep for themselves.

On Lake Winnebago

Chopping Ice on Lake Winnebago

With each thunk of the chisel
the white/blue ice chips catch the sun
and glint in cascades of light

On the lake shore
smothered in dents
a minnow bucket is tossed on end
abandoned in dull brown rocks.

I feel the north wind thrust through my parka
The trees crack as the horizon gives in to the cold.

Ice shantys checker the lake
Inside bearded fishermen lean over cards
and pot-bellied stoves throb and glow.

As I chop the ice shoves to shore
tearing itself to shards
The shoreline ruffles itself
like a man pulling up his collar.

On Lake Winnebago is a collection about life and nature of the water and nearby areas.

Factory Rejects: Two for a Nickel

Placing the blame

Read the papers
and try to find a place to put the blame.
One day it’s the politicians taking bribes,
then it’s the boss and incompetence.
Seems like everybody brown nosing.

Cheers a ball game happy when
your team wins. When they lose it’s
the other team to blame.

Blame the other guy.
It’s the other guy who’s a rotten driver
who’s on welfare, someone high on drugs,
the the breaking and entering
destroying our environment, cheating, lying
murdering, corruption everything —
it’s where to place the blame.

Factory Rejects: Two for a Nickel | Selected poems collected over 40 years, this book contains a wide variety of wry observations.

Bay View Spiders

Spider Island

Late autumn blisters yellow and black,
as garden spiders weave silver webs
linked to brown field grass.

Spiders hang plumb-like from strands.
We boys trap them in jars and take them
to Spider Island.

Some fall in the water,
drown in a futile clutching. Some spin
webs in private frenzy. Some wait patiently
for the familiar tug in its web.

Bay View Spiders | It’s about the boy’s autumn excursions in the fields and around his boyhood world. Spiders were a fascination.

Tracing

Her eyes
through a mirror of snow
rattles my mind like gates
in cold November hills.

Her scarf billows with the wind
and I think of a blacksmith bellows,
the red coals that pierce the whiteness.

Her eyes are vast suns,
and from them clear water flows.
I hear raindrops hissing in coals.

I raise my hammer and strike the steel.
Her eyes appear in the links of my chain.

Network of Wires | With the themes of romance, love, and lament, this book contains selected longer poems that have all seen publication in the small press.

Along the Shore

alongtheshores

Winnebago Boys

Lake whitecaps
roll along rock shorelines
and the wood docks shudder as
each roller comes in.

***

We lake boys cannonball from the docks,
some use inner tubes, some belly flop.

***

The lake gives her treasures:
floats, canepoles, corks, and
waterlogged live boxes.
We gather them in.

***

Winnebago boys search the banks,
then huddle under widespread willows,
while the clean scent of fish and weeds
freshen the air.

Along the Shore | Nature and Adventure follow the boy exploring as he grows up in an idyllic setting of Wisconsin. Includes some earlier and longer poems as well.
